Finding your unique brand of gold
I was talking with a prospective client today whose life has been varied and vibrant. She was bemoaning her inability to string two words together to compile some of her experiences which she would dearly love to do for the benefit of her beloved grand and eventually great-grandchildren.
‘I get stuck in my own thought patterns,’ she remarked. ‘This makes it near impossible for me to be objective around what about me others might be interested in knowing or learning, down the generations, or what – in the mix of me and my life – is even of particular value in the scheme of things.’
This woman can be forgiven for thinking this. In our own skin – the joys notwithstanding – it often DOESN’T feel like our individual life has been especially earth shattering. We have spent decades conforming on some level or other, with our own, or society’s expectations of us. And the perceived banality and drudgery of life (eating, working, keeping house and raising children, sleeping, waking, eating ….) …obstructs our view of our achievements – major or micro – and the unsung character traits that have enabled these. Through the repetitive script of our lives we fail to recognise and honour the defining punctuation marks!
She acknowledged that after our conversation, she came away feeling happy with herself in a way she hadn’t felt for ages – reinvigorated and validated. But that redponse, far from rocket science, simply relates to her acquisition of FRESH PERSPECTIVE. I just happened to be the person she shared the life episodes with, and one who happened to be well versed in accurately playing back to a person the signals I receive from them – the good, the bad, the ugly. And the fact was that some of the events in this person’s life and her responses to them (as she rattled them off as if citing the alphabet!), left me in absolute awe.
As humans we underestimate our unique brand of gold. It takes an observer or mentor to shine the spotlight ?and reveal the sparkle. ?
No wonder this woman is stuck with her autobiographical efforts. She’s too close to herself and needs external help to examine her life’s unfolding – and to dig for the gold – with fresh eyes.
So if you ever plan to write a DIY life story, be sure to ask a skilled observer for feedback before you get started. Or better still, invest in a mentor. Or EVEN better still, send me a message to schedule a call so we can schedule some time to talk through what you’d like to achieve! ?
