Sharing your unique wisdom
Ever felt that journaling your life experiences / thoughts / observations / ideas / hopes / regrets / jokes / anecdotes / recipes etc is just a pleasant way to pass the hours of the day? Perhaps at a way to give your family members a way to remember you, should they choose to do so?
Well, think again.Leaving a legacy can also serve a hugely HELPFUL inter-generational purpose. After all, seniors have many years of accumulated wisdom (and possibly a good deal of this has been derived from human mistakes and ensuing ‘lessons learned’.) Passing that PERSPECTIVE along to their grandkids and great-grandchildren can help them leave a more informed and satisfactory life.
A memoir provides a great way for seniors to do this. The self-story or memoir is different from an autobiography, in that it describes the author’s life as it relates to a person, event, or thing, whereas an autobiography gives a play-by-play account of chronological details. Therefore, the seniors of today should view their memoirs as a way to provide an invaluable, much-needed perspective, rather than just a timeline of their lives. Of course, they can incorporate details, stories, and milestones, but the most important aspect is that UNIQUE WISDOM that can only be conveyed from the author directly. From ‘the horse’s mouth’ .. so to speak.
It saddens me when I meet seniors who haven’t internalised the fact that they are – no matter their life experience – UNIQUELY placed to hold an impactful role in the family NOW and in SUCCESSIVE GENERATIONS. And chronicling a legacy in the form of a memoir is a most powerful way to enact this influence.
None of us know what we don’t know. This applies most especially to young people! To bequeath them an unexpected gift of an alternate perspective, one that is steeped in the wisdom of a life lived before, has the potential to improve and even ALTER the trajectory of their lives.
Now THAT’S what I call positive influence. What about you?
